Biography Of Political Party

Processes leading to establishment of what is now a vibrant political institution and today officially known as the Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP) actually began on October 26, 2014 when Organizing Chairman, the Late Cllr. Edward K. Gobah wrote a letter to the then NEC Chairman Jerome G. Korkoya, declaring the intention of several Liberians to establish a new political party in the country.

Eventually on Thursday, July 23, 2015, the LPDP was accredited to operate as a full-fledged political party in Liberia by the National Elections Commission (NEC) at a ceremony held at the Headquarters of the Commission in Sinkor, Monrovia.

At that ceremony, the Organizing Chairman of the LPDP, the Late Cllr. Gobah extolled the National Elections Commission for the scrupulous scrutiny of documents submitted by the party which resulted to its accreditation as a registered political party in the country.

Consistent with the standards set in Chapter (E) 3.7 (a) of the Revised Guidelines on the Registration of Political Parties and Candidates promulgated by the NEC on May 14, 2014 and the New Elections Law of Liberia, the LPDP satisfied all requirements for registration including the submission of two bank accounts of 15,100.00 United States Dollars and 8,400.00 Liberian Dollars respectively; an Indemnity Insurance Policy of 100,000.00 United States Dollars; and the establishment of a headquarters in the City of Monrovia, among others.

First National Convention

In fulfillment of the Electoral Laws, the LPDP between December 11 and 12, 2015, hosted its First National Convention under the theme “LPDP: the New Direction” in Kakata, Margibi County. At the convention a corps of officers was elected to steer the affairs of the party for a period of five years each.

The occasion was graced by officials of the then government, representatives of various political parties, members of the 53rd Liberian Legislature and hundreds of partisans from the length and breadth of Liberia.

At the climax of the convention, the newly elected Chairman, the then Lofa County Electoral District #5 Representative Hon. Chief Moses Yarkpazuo Kollie, said the LPDP is not interested in “big book and empty talk or slippery language, but direct and simple answers to unemployment, poverty, quality schools for Liberia’s children, business opportunities and better healthcare, among others.

Hoisting of Party Flag

In 2016, the LPDP set another record by touring the 15 counties of Liberia to hoist its flag in the capital city of each and every county. This was the first time for a political party in the country to conduct such a nationwide exercise. The essence of the exercise was to establish visibility everywhere as a pure grassroots political institution.

Formation of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC)

The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) – Liberia’s first collaborative effort of political parties to have ascended to state power, was founded by three independent political institutions, namely the LPDP, the National Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).

But guess what? Before the formation and launch of the Coalition, the National Executive Committee of the LPDP convened a Special Sitting in which the then Speaker of the 53rd Legislature and now Bomi County Senator, Honorable Jeneka Alex Tyler, Sr. was overwhelmingly elected as Political Leader of the party.

Second National Convention

As the 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections drew closer, the LPDP decided to put its house in proper order to engage the process. One of the activities carried out in this endeavor was the convening of its 2nd National Convention, which took place in Tubmanburg, Bomi County on Saturday, December 17, 2022, under the theme: “Building Unity in Diversity”.
The Keynote Speaker at this convention was the current Senator of Maryland County and then Chairman of the NPP, Honorable James Biney.
In his speech, he strongly criticized the marginalization of his party, the NPP and our party, the LPDP in the then Coalition Government, headed by George Weah of the Congress for Democratic Change.
Making his opening statement earlier before the keynote address, the LPDP then National Chairman, Hon. Chief Moses Y. Kollie said that the Convention was organized for two main reasons; to adopt a revised constitution and elect a new leadership for the party. “Delegates and Fellow Partisans, I wish to utilize this time to officially inform you that the tenures of all of us that were elected during our First National Convention held in Kakata, Margibi County in 2015 under the theme: “LPDP: the New Direction” have expired, he averred.
For his part, the then Political Leader of the party and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, J. Alex Tyler, Sr. encouraged delegates of the Convention to remain peaceful, responsible, and tolerant at all times.
He further remarked that the LPDP was not one of the “fly-by-night” political parties in the country, but a responsible institution and that has come in the political landscape of the country to stay and work in the interest of the country and the people.”

Recommitment to the New Coalition Agreement of 2023

The recommitment of the LPDP to the New Coalition Agreement in 2023 was greeted by mixed reactions within the ranks and files of the party. The situation was due to the unfair treatment that was being meted against the LPDP by former President Weah and his Congress for Democratic Change, mainly by failing to provide jobs and other opportunities for qualified partisans of the LPDP, in spite of the frantic efforts that were exerted by the leadership of the party, in the interest of its members.
When the New Coalition Agreement surfaced, our former Political Leader, Senator Tyler expressed his disapproval in recommitting the party to it, but interestingly, majority of the members of the National Executive Committee of the LPDP signed a resolution to recommit the party to the said agreement, while Honorable Tyler decided to suspend his membership with the party to run as an independent candidate in the Bomi County Senatorial race, and at the same time supported the Unity Party.

During a press conference on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at its National Headquarters, the LPDP officially announced the withdrawal of its membership from the Coalition for Democratic Change. The decision was made through a resolution signed by more than two-thirds majority of the membership of the National Executive Committee of the party.
The original copies of the resolution and official notice of withdrawal were notarized and submitted to the CDC’s National Executive Committee Chairman, Atty. Janga A. Kowo, as required by Article 11, Sections 1 and 2 of the New Coalition Framework Document of 2023.
During the press gathering, the party also announced the indefinite suspension of its then Secretary General, Hon. D. Eric Kpayer for making statements on radio that had the proclivity to have brought the LPDP into public disrepute.
On account of the suspension of SG Kpayea, the Party’s Deputy National Secretary General, Gbalee Gray, was endorsed as Acting National Secretary General until further notice.
Upon hearing the news about his indefinite suspension by the party, Honorable Kpayea, not wanting to be subjected to any form of investigation, quickly tendered in his resignation letter and exited the party.
The press release was read by Hon. George M. Woodtor, National Vice Chair of the LPDP for Press/Public Affairs.
